THINGS YOU ONLY NEED TO REMEMBER BRIEFLY
(excerpt)
an ironmonger’s phone number
a healed wound
room 31
a taxi driver’s face
how many minutes you arrived late
shoes you no longer wear
passers-by on a zebra crossing
the voice of a woman who dialled the wrong number
clouds
the weight of a bag
address of a discontinued dry cleaner’s
sound of falling pans
rain puddles
the man in front of you at the bakery
shapes in a kaleidoscope
an umbrella in a waiting room
noise that traffic makes
clipped nails
a hairdresser’s movements
the number of a reserved seat
handshake at a reception
a room seen through a window
soap bubbles
a woman asking you for directions in your own neighbourhood
Schlippers, K. "THINGS YOU ONLY NEED TO REMEMBER BRIEFLY (poem) - K. Schippers - Netherlands - Poetry International." THINGS YOU ONLY NEED TO REMEMBER BRIEFLY (poem) - K. Schippers. N.p., 2011. Web. 9 Sept. 2014.
I enjoy this poem because it contains so much imagery. Even though the poem itself makes no sense when read by itself, the title adds so much. We go through our lives every day with so many things happening all around us that we simply forget about a couple of minutes later. It makes me think about all of the things I did today I won't have any recollection of tomorrow and how some of us just drift through life. We pay no attention to so many fine details that make life like a sculpture instead of just a block of stone.
