Pandora's Box - Megan Woodrum

Pandora was a women created by the order of Zeus himself, he made her beautiful and had her married to a man. The purpose of Pandora's creation was to punish mankind for their learning of fire and civilization; the punishment came in the form of a box as a wedding present. Crafted by Hermes, it was beautiful and appealing, but she was told she must never, EVER open it. Without being told what was inside, opening the box became an irresistible idea. She would clean it and stare at it, but resisting became harder and harder. She placed a lock on the box, then hid it away, even that wasn't enough eventually she had to bury it in the yard. That too wasn't enough in the end; she clawed the box out of the ground and opened it. While the outside was beautiful and lovely the inside contained all of the horrors and evils in the world. The contents terrified Pandora and while they flooded out she regained her wits and slammed the box shut before the final evil could escape. This final evil was the worst of them all, and would have been the doom of mankind.

An evil that I would have enjoyed not to escape is the abuse of women in certain countries. I hate more than anything that there is the sex trafficking, a refusal of eduction, attacks because of disagreements with their father or husband. No where should a woman have her life endangered for different beliefs, because of trying to be themselves, or just for their bodies. A woman shouldn't be burnt with their husband at his funeral, or beaten for cheating, Women aren't possessions and its a shame and a disgrace that they are still thought of in the that way in some places.

  1. Domestic abuse towards women has always been an important topic in my opinion. This topic simply does not get the amount of attention that it deserves. I made my PSA in english class last year about domestic abuse because how awful I realized it is. You don't even realize that someone might be abused, either, because so many women never report it. Women should not feel inferior to men because they aren't. They also shouldn't feel that it is okay for any man to physically hurt them because it isn't. This problem will not go away until everyone in our nation and our world realizes and agrees that women are equal and deserve to be treated as such and not as punching bags.

  2. I was not familiar with the story of Pandora's Box prior to reading your blog post. I thought you provided a great summary though! I can relate to Pandora's lack of self-control.
And I absolutely agree with your other statements! I'm tired of women being "inferior" in the eyes of society. It's not fair for women to constantly feel threatened. Sadly, I don't think this issue will ever go away but it's nice to know someone else shares the same opinion!
