Rhyme Ryan Collins

On being asked for a War Poem

BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS
I think it better that in times like these --A
A poet's mouth be silent, for in truth--B
We have no gift to set a statesman right;--C
He has had enough of meddling who can please--A
A young girl in the indolence of her youth,--B
Or an old man upon a winter’s night.--C

This short poem contains an ABC rhyme scheme that makes this seemingly curtailed piece feel more complete. All rhymes are perfect rhymes, giving the poem a steady, rhythmic flow. The author divided the poem into two sections, one making a claim that poets should not comment or write pieces on wars, and the other supporting the claim. The ABC rhyme scheme links these two parts, and makes the second easier to read than the first due the harmonic flow created by the perfect rhymes.
