Cain and Abel- Julian Perry

The story of Cain and Abel is one of tragedy between brothers, and one that I know quite well by memory. Cain and Abel are sons of Adam and Eve, the first humans. Cain grows crops as a gift to god, while Abel sends god a gift of animal meat. Abel is praised by the lord for his gift, while Cain is cast to the side. In a jealous rage, Cain murders his own brother in his field of crops. God punishes Cain by cursing him with the inability to ever grow crops again.

Sibling rivalries are as common as siblings themselves. The Bible tries to teach people through this story that nothing can come of sibling feuds. Having three older brothers, I've taken away a lot from the many variations of this story throughout my years. Living in the shadow of an older brother's accomplishments can lead to low self esteem as well as a desire to blame said brother for something which they truly had no choice in either. Blame and revenge never lead to happiness, as this story portrays. True acceptance of yourself is the only way to happiness. Constantly comparing yourself to others is a fast lane to failure.

  1. Very deep, thorough analysis of the sibling rivalry. It is very obvious that you yourself have a brother and therefore you have first-hand experience on what it is like to have a sibling rivalry like the one that Cain and Abel experienced.

  2. Good job on this post! You have retold the story of Cain and Abel very well and I understand it clearly just from reading your version. You also did an excellent job relating the biblical lessons in this tale to your own experiences. It is clear that you learned from your own sibling experiences.
